Douglas was born in Pierce, Colorado, a farming town with a population of 400. He grew up on a 2,600 acre ranch and learned to appreciate nature at a very early age.
While attending Colorado State University, Douglas took one look at the course outline for his selected major of engineering and immediately changed his focus to art. He has been painting since 1971.
He developed an interest in Vedic art and spent one year in India researching and developing his painting technique. In 1980 he traveled to Florence, Italy and began to paint "en plein aire" for the first time. His ability with the human figure and landscapes enabled him in 1989 to be employed by Walt Disney Feature Animation. He painted backgrounds for such Disney classics as The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Tarzan.
He traveled to Moorea, French Polynesia where he developed his appreciation for tropical landscape. Douglas and his wife, Susana, built a studio in Laupahoehoe, Hawaii and have made the Big Island their home.
